PATH crews started construction on several new projects during the fall. Efforts to connect downtown Conyers to the South River and the Rockdale River Trail began last month when PATH crews began construction of the Old Towne Conyers Trail along Parker Road. The trail segment underway will connect Old Towne Conyers to Wheeler Park and the Rockdale Career Academy. Future phases of this trail will continue south to Johnson Park and ultimately to the Rockdale River Trail.
The phase under construction begins at Travis and Green Streets and connects the Rockdale County Library across I-20 to Wheeler Park and the Career Academy. The $600,000 project is being funded by a SPLOST from the City of Conyers, in-kind services by Rockdale County, and your donations to PATH. Nine bids were received with the lowest responsive bid being submitted by ISC, Inc. ISC and Rockdale County crews started construction in Wheeler Park in late October. The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring.
The second phase of the South Peachtree Creek Trail in central DeKalb is now under construction. This phase includes a rather impressive bridge and boardwalk system to span the CSX railroad just south of the Mason Mill Tennis Center. Phase two will connect the Tennis Center parking area and the Emory Parc neighborhood to Phase One of the trail and Medlock Park.
Construction began on phase two in October and is scheduled for completion in March. Litchy Construction was the lowest responsive bidder for the project.
The sixth phase of the Arabia Mountain Trail is one of several improvements being made to the Arabia Mountain Heritage area along Klondike Road in South DeKalb County. PATH crews began work on the extension of the Arabia Mountain Trail from the existing trail south of the nature center along Klondike Road to the parking area at Arabia Mountain in late September. This segment will be largely a boardwalk trail on top of rock outcroppings, paralleling Klondike Road. Litchy Construction was also chosen to complete this trail.
Two more projects have been successfully bid but have not been awarded as of press time. We will cover these projects in our spring newsletter. Both projects are extensions to the South River Trail system in DeKalb and Rockdale Counties.
